THUNDER BAY -- Teleperformance Canada has issued a formal statement regarding the closure of its local operations.

On Tuesday the company issued a media statement confirming the closure of its Red River Road location, which employed about 160 people.

Employees received notice that the last day of employment would be no later than April 20.

Company officials say the decision had no bearing on the performance of the local operation. “The decision had to be made due to recent client decisions and the lease expiring,” the statement explains.

Teleperformance first opened up its local office nearly a decade ago.

Thunder Bay Community Economic Development Commission CEO Doug Murray said his organization helped bring Teleperformance to the city.

"We're obviously sorry to see them go," He said. "It's tough on the employees...our hearts go out to them."

The CEDC is going to work with the company to to get more details to see if there's anything the organization can do. It's also working with the owner of the building to find new tenants for the space.
