According to the Fraser Institute, St. Margaret  and Crestview schools are Thunder Bay’s best elementary school.

The right-wing think tank on Sunday released its annual ranking of Ontario’s schools and placed both schools 172nd in the province with an 8.4 score (out of 10). Both showed marked improvements over their 2014 showing.

St. Francis School (8.3), Holy Cross School (7.7), and Woodcrest Public School (7.5) round out the top five.

Once again the Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board dominated the top of the rankings locally, placing seven schools in the top 10.

In total, the Fraser Institute listed 3,037 Ontario schools, ranking them based on nine criteria derived from province-wide test in reading, writing and arithmetic.

McKellar Park School is the city’s lowest ranked, according the Fraser Institute, checking in with a 3.0 score, a slight improvement over 2014. This places them 2,870th in Ontario. Thirteen schools, all in southern Ontario, scored perfect 10s to top the provincial list.

Fifteen schools can boast higher scores than a year ago, while four showed no movement. Eight schools saw their score decline, none more than Holy Family School, which fell from 7.4 to 5.5.
