A Banff, Alta. man’s trip through U.S. customs wasn’t that sweet after all.

According to border officials, a Canadian citizen en route to Quebec was stopped and searched at the Grand Portage, Minn. crossing, where border protection officers stumbled upon 32 sealed aluminum cans labeled maple syrup.

Upon further inspection, customs officials discovered not all the cans weighed the same and began opening the lighter ones.

Inside they found plastic bags containing a total of 429 grams of marijuana.

The suspect, who wasn’t named in a release issued Wednesday by the U.S. Border Protection Office of Field Operations, was turned over to the Cook County Sheriff’s office for possible prosecution.

“No matter where you hide your contraband, CBP officers will make every effort to discover it,” said Pembina Area Port Director Mary Delaquis.

"The attention to detail demonstrated by the officers involved in this seizure proves our officers are constantly vigilant in performing the CBP mission.”
