THUNDER BAY – A fire has caused significant damage to a south side home.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue firefighters responded to reports of a structural fire at an Isabella Street home shortly after 5:30 p.m. Sunday where they found the back of the house on fire.

“As we arrived on scene the first crews noticed the back of the building was involved and it was extending into the inside of the house, possibly through the eaves,” on-duty platoon chief Dan Hyvarinen said.

“The damage is fairly heavy. It travelled from the basement to the main floor and up to the second storey.”
Nobody was injured as a result of the fire.

Hyvarinen said a passerby noticed the flames and alerted the occupants, who were able to safely escape the building.

The cause is not immediately known. An inspector is expected to examine the scene and the investigation is ongoing.
