Boulevard Lake improvement could be as easy as fresh cut grass

THUNDER BAY -- Addressing the public's main concern with Boulevard Lake could be as simple as not cutting the grass.

The Boulevard Lake Improvement Plan is looking to make the park and lake better for the public. With the city's second open house on the area Tuesday, EDS Group environmental planner John Buchko said it's clear that water quality is the main issue people have with the lake.

"I think it was front of mind for everybody," he said.

Geese feces is a main reason the lake's beach needs to be shut down. A simple way to keep the geese away from the lake is to not mow the grass near the shore.

The plan could also see making the lake deeper near the beach, improving stormwater quality or even creating a wetland island that acts as a water filter.

"I think people generally want the beach open all the time," city parks panner Werner Schwar said.

The plan will also include improving accessibility around the park and enhancing recreation. Most of it will be low or no cost. Buchko said in the case of less grass maintenance, the city could actually save money.

"If anything we're just enhancing current uses," he said.

Council should see the plan by early July.
