The Thunder Bay’s Health Unit’s loss is the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care’s gain.

David Williams, the medical officer of health at the Health Unit, has been tasked by the province to act as interim chief medical officer of health for Ontario until Sept. 30.

It’s the second time the province has called on Williams, the first coming in 2011.

In his absence, Janet DeMille will take on the role of acting medical officer of health at TBDHU.

“It is a show of public confidence and a testament to his dedication to public health that Dr. Williams has again been called upon by the Ministry for a provincial leadership position,” said Norm Gale, chairman  of the Board of Health, in a release issued Tuesday by the health unit.

“The board is also pleased that through effective succession planning, the TBDHU’s Associate MOH Dr. Janet DeMille is fully prepared to step into the Acting MOH role; providing the Thunder Bay District with seamless MOH coverage during Dr. Williams’ absence.”

DeMille has been with the Health Unit since 2012, previously spending five years with the organization in clinical services.
