More power means more economic development a remote First Nation community says.

On Friday the Northern Ontario Heritage Corporation announced its $2.5 million share of a $5 million project in Fort Severn, the province's Northernmost community, that will set up a wind and solar micro-grid to cut the community's need for diesel fuel in half.

Keewaytinook Okimakanak executive director Geordi Kakepetum said the area is full of people with great business ideas that need more power to get them going. This plan, a pilot project, will help that happen.

"This is our plan. There are going to be many yet to come," he said.

Northern Development and Mines Minister Michael Gravelle said the project reduces the need for remote communities to use diesel.

"We are very focused and keen to see that end," he said.

It's projected that the micro-grid will be in place by mid-September.
