Port sees dip in cargo for August, still above five-year average

THUNDER BAY -- After two years of busy traffic, the Thunder Bay Port Authority is seeing a dip in the amount of cargo travelling through the local harbour.

THUNDER BAY -- After two years of busy traffic, the Thunder Bay Port Authority is seeing a dip in the amount of cargo travelling through the local harbour.

The numbers show the port moved around 640,000 metric tonnes of grain last month, and nearly a million tonnes of cargo overall.

While those numbers represent a significant drop from August of 2014, they're still slightly above the port's five-year averages.

Officials with the port authority say the drop is due to adverse weather conditions affecting grain harvests in western Canada.

Heney says while the numbers are down, the Port Authority is still expecting strong numbers through the fall.
