UPDATE: OPP now have one lane of the highway open as of 4:15 p.m.

OPP News Release

(IGNACE, ON) – On the 9th day of September 2015 at approximately 9:00 a.m. the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Ignace Detachment officers were dispatched to a head on motor vehicle collision on Highway 17 approximately 40 km East of Ignace. 

Police have confirmed 1 occupant of one of the motor vehicles is deceased and 4 are injured.

The identity of the deceased will not be released pending the notification of next of kin.

Ignace officers are being assisted by officers from the Thunder Bay and Upsala Detachments as well as a Technical Traffic Collision Investigator (TTCI) and the Forensic Identification Unit (FIU) out of Thunder Bay.

Highway 17 has been closed most of the day and will continue to be closed until Police have completed their investigation.  The public can contact 511 for updated road closure information.
