THUNDER BAY -- A 60-year-old woman has been arrested in conjunction with a historical sexual assault case.

Tarja Trochimchuk faces charges of sexual exploitation, sexual assault and assault.

Police allege the incidents took place between 1992 and 1999 and involved a female victim who was 15 at the time the assaults began.

The arrest comes at the end of a four-month investigation. The victim was a client of the accused, who was a counsellor at the Lakehead Regional Family centre.

Trochimchuk resigned from her position in 2002.

Thunder Bay Police Services spokesman Chris Adams said in historic cases, there's a chance others may have been victims as he urged anyone who has experienced sexual assault to speak out.

"You have to realize with historic sexual assault investigations, it's a very difficult process usually for the victim to come forward," Adams said.

"There has been a lot of time that has lapsed but to be able to step forward, work with police, takes a tremendous amount of courage. Certainly, we'd encourage anyone who has had something like this that has happened historically to know support is there by police and other agencies for them."

Trochimchuk was released on an undertaking and is next expected to appear in court on Nov. 13.
