Underground tragedy claims life of worker at Musselwhite Mine

A worker is dead after an incident at Musselwhite Mine. Goldcorp, which owns the mine, issued a statement Thursday morning and said the worker was operating a scoop underground early Wednesday morning when rock fell on the scoop.

A worker is dead after an incident at Musselwhite Mine.

Goldcorp, which owns the mine, issued a statement Thursday morning and said the worker was operating a scoop underground early Wednesday morning when rock fell on the scoop.

The company said it immediately launched a search and rescue operation and found the scoop completely covered.

"We are all deeply saddened by this tragic accident. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the individual's family, friends and colleagues," said Chuck Jeannes, Goldcorp president and chief executive officer in the statement.

"The health and safety of our employees is our highest priority at Goldcorp. We are fully cooperating with the ongoing investigation to determine the cause of the accident, and are offering support to the individual's family and employees at the mine site."

Operations have been suspended at the mine, which is a fly-in mine located nearly 500 kilometres north of Thunder Bay, as the incident is investigated.

The identity of the victim has not been released.
