THUNDER BAY -- Police have named a suspect in Thursday afternoon's assault at Casablanca Apartments that resulted in the murder of 60-year-old George James Gerard.

The Thunder Bay Police Service has laid a second-degree murder charge against 37-year-old Nicholas Joseph Necan. Necan has also been charged with two counts of assault with a weapon and failing to comply with an undertaking.

Police allege Necan struggled with officers who were responding to a 3:30 p.m. disturbance at the Sinpson Street apartment complex.

They say he threatened an officer and an unnamed 62-year-old female from another apartment during the incident in which Necan allegedly assaulted Gerard.

Gerard was transported to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Police are not releasing details on the weapon or weapons used in the assault.

TBPS executive officer Chris Adams said Gerard and Necan had a "limited relationship."

Although Adams said Necan had a reason to be in the apartment complex, he would not say whether that reason extended to Gerard's apartment.

"He did appear to have some sort of connection inside the building," Adams said.

"As far as the exact details leading up to the murder, that now is evidence and will be before the courts."
