THUNDER BAY – An intersection on Highway 61 has been the scene of numerous collisions since the James Street Swing Bridge was closed to traffic in 2013.

But officials with the Ministry of Transportation say the number of crashes in that area is on the decline. Meanwhile, the OPP says motorists simply need to be smarter when they’re driving on the highway.

On Tuesday a 61 year old woman was charged with careless driving and driving while suspended following this collision at the intersection of Chippewa Road.

The area seems to have featured more collisions since the James Street Swing Bridge was closed to traffic, and according to MTO statistics there was a rise in reported crashes in 2014.

That trend ended after the MTO added new signage and marking to the area in 2015.

While collisions are back down for the area, OPP Sgt. Ken Mantey says crashes like the one reported Tuesday serve as a reminder that some motorists simply don’t drive properly when they get behind the wheel.

One of the big factors, Mantey adds, is that many drivers fail to adjust their driving to the road conditions. A lack of attention to other vehicles and even pedestrians is also a routine issue.
