THUNDER BAY -- City spending is the order of the day at tonight’s city council meeting, as Thunder Bay's elected officials are going to be looking at the city's first quarter budget variance.

The report is projecting the city will come in anywhere between $380,000 and $760,000 over budget by year's end.

The biggest costs named are ongoing insurance claims against the city, and a $300,000 from Thunder Bay Police (read a more thorough report about that issue here).

Coun. Rebecca Johnson says the price of policing is rising across the province, and many municipalities are now examining how to best control those costs.

Other items up for consideration include a $2.7 million cost overrun on the reconstruction of Balmoral Street (read more about that issue here).

That project originally called for the installation of a single storm drain, but detailed designs reveal now that the grade of the road requires a two-pipe system.

Phase 1 of the project was originally slated to run from the Neebing McIntyre Floodway to Alloy Drive.

In light of the added costs, staff are now recommending the first phase stop at Hewitson Street instead.
