Man, woman killed in fatal highway crash identified

(KENORA, ON) - Members of the Kenora Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) with the assistance of OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigators (TTCI), and the OPP Forensic Investigation Unit (FISU) are investigating a fatal motor vehicle collision. 

On Thursday May 26, 2016 just before 3:00 pm police were notified of a serious collision involving two vehicles on highway 671 near Mark Lake. It was reported that a north-bound mini-van and southbound pick-up truck had collided head on in the northbound lane. 

Two people from the northbound vehicle were confirmed deceased at the scene.

The deceased have been identified as 47 year old Lisa KABESTRA and 50 year old Julius TAYPAYWAYKEJICK of Grassy Narrows First Nation.

OPP Highway Safety Division, Treaty Three Police, Kenora Fire, Kenora Ambulance and ORNGE Air Ambulance assisted at the scene. 

Two people from the southbound vehicle were taken to hospital with non- life threatening injuries.

Charges are pending and the investigation is continuing.
