THUNDER BAY - The city is planning on establishing a new youth centre in the Northwood area.

The youth centre will cause the relocation of a local business.

Donna Sippala, the acting director of recreation and culture with the city said the Northwood area has been identified as being under serviced for youth.

Councillor Shelby Ch'ung calls this new centre a great idea. But before fully supporting it she wants to see the city’s rationale behind using this location.

Half this centre is occupied by the Fort City Kinsmen, who rent out the other half to the Thunder Bay Judo Dojo. Now, the Dojo isn't exactly being forced out as the city is willing to work with them.

Dojo officials said there would be too many issues with sharing this space and potential damages to their mats is another worry.

City officials said they are currently looking for a space for the Dojo within their existing facilities.

Sippala said the programming at this site will be determined by the youth.

Start-up is expected this fall. Further details will be discussed at a meeting next week between Ch'ng and administration.
