THUNDER BAY - Dozens of senior residents living at McKellar Place are just now getting their power back on, in the aftermath of Saturday's flooding.

The former McKellar Hospital is now a senior's residence on the city's south side.

Half of the building was left without power after a transformer blew during the weekend's heavy rain.

Owner Ahsanul Habib said excess water from the surrounding streets came into their basement, and caused a transformer unit to short-circuit.

Habib added that the nearest replacement is in Wisconsin, and will take three days to arrive.

Until then, they've installed an emergency generator, which was expected to restore power to the affected units by 6 o'clock.

He couldn't say how many seniors were affected, but said they were all being provided with regular meals, along with flashlights and other supplies.

McKellar Place experienced similar problems during the floods of 2012, and Habib said they are now looking at moving their transformers out of the basement.
