There were no new forest fires by the afternoon of June 30 in the Northwest Region
The forest fire hazard is low in the south and ranging and moderate to high in the central and far north sectors of the region.
Current active fires include:
• Red Lake District Fire 003, in Woodland Caribou Provincial Park, being observed at a size of 74,334 hectares.
• Sioux Lookout District Fire 013 is under control at 22 hectares in size. It is located about 25 kilometers northwest of Cat Lake. FireRanger crews are working on suppressing this fire.
• Sioux Lookout District Fire 014 is being observed. The lightning-caused fire is located in a remote location in the far north. Its current size is 12 hectares.
Fireworks during long weekends are a tradition, but there are conditions for use of fireworks under the Ontario Forest Fires Prevention Act. People who discharge fireworks in or within 300 metres of a forest area must make sure that there is no burning residue left.
There may also be municipal by-laws regarding the use of fireworks so check with local fire officials before setting fireworks.
People should choose a fire safe-area that is free of flammable materials to ignite fireworks such as in a gravel area or over a body of water. Have fire suppression equipment on hand and when done, check the area for any hot residue and make sure it is put out. People may also opt to attend an organized fireworks venue instead of setting off their own.
