THUNDER BAY -- A 55-year-old female cyclist was sent to hospital on Wednesday afternoon with significant, but minor injuries after another cyclist stopped suddenly to avoid colliding with a dump truck.

The incident occurred at the intersection of Oliver and Mapleward roads.

In a release issued by Thunder Bay Police Services, investigators say the 69-year-old dump truck driver was traveling southward on Mapleward Road and stopped, but was inching forward to get a better view of traffic on Oliver Road before making a left turn.

The lead cyclist, a 57-year-old man, braked suddenly, telling officers he believed the truck was going to start its turn His companion ran into him and was sent flying from her bike.

Neither cyclist was wearing a helmet, but because both are older than 18, it’s not required under provincial law.

No charges will be laid, though police say both cyclists have promised to wear helmets from this point forward.
