THUNDER BAY – Runway upgrades at the Thunder Bay International Airport are now complete.

One of two runways at the city airport were shut down in May for upkeep and repaving.

Thunder Bay Airport officials on Wednesday celebrated the official reopening of the improved runways.

CEO Ed Schmidtke said the work led to significant upgrades to two runways, which are now in “great shape.”

The improvements required more than just fresh pavement. The runway upgrades featured some significant storm sewer upgrades among other things.

“We suffered some delays due to wet weather in June,” Schmidtke said during an interview with CKPR Radio. “But the construction crews that were on that job were very good, sometimes working 12 or sometimes 16 hour days, to makeup time on the schedule.”
