The province is expanding the Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund (OCIF) to help build and repair more critical infrastructure in small, rural and northern municipalities.

The government is increasing its investment in the municipalities within the ridings of Thunder Bay-Atikokan and Thunder Bay-Superior North over three years to better meet local infrastructure needs.

“I am proud of our government’s ongoing commitment to improving infrastructure in our northern communities,” said MPP Bill Mauro (Lib., Thunder Bay – Atikokan). “Currently our municipalities in Thunder Bay –Atikokan and Thunder Bay-Superior North are collectively receiving a total of $1.9 million dollars annually.”

Individual municipalities will receive formula-based funding annually based on their economic conditions and the infrastructure they own, such as roads, bridges and wastewater facilities.

Additionally municipalities now have the option to bank their formula-based funding, allowing them more flexibility to create long-term plans and carry out larger infrastructure projects.

“After today’s announcement, total annual funding received through the OCIF fund by 2018-2019 will be $7.3 million dollars annually,” Mauro added.

“This total represents an increase of $5.4 million dollars.  With this increase in funding, municipalities now have the opportunity to address larger infrastructure projects.”

Ontario is making the largest investment in public infrastructure in the province’s history — about $160 billion over 12 years, which is supporting 110,000 jobs every year across the province, with projects such as roads, bridges, transit systems, schools and hospitals.

In 2015, the province announced support for more than 325 projects that will keep people and goods moving, connect communities and improve quality of life.

Funding through the Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund for Communities in the Ridings of Thunder Bay-Atikokan and Thunder Bay-Superior North for the next three years is listed below.
