A woman charged with second-degree murder in the death of her cousin will have a bail hearing Sept. 30.

At a bail hearing Friday Justice Helen Pierce approved the request from a representative for defense lawyer Christopher Watkins to adjourn Monica Spence’s bail hearing.

Spence, 45, is one of two people charged with second-degree murder following the death of 62-year-old Richard Spence. Richard Spence was found dead in his Secord Street apartment in the early morning hours of Dec. 21, 2014.

Spence was originally released on bail in March of 2015.

The conditions of that release forced Spence to live with her sister in Hamilton under house arrest. She was also under 24-hour supervision.

She is not to return to Thunder Bay with the exceptions of court appearances and medical appointments. She is also not allowed to contact the co-accused or any witnesses.

During a two-day contested bail review hearing in January 2015, Watkins submitted that Spence be released to Hamilton to undergo treatment for alcohol addiction.

The court heard Spence grappled with addiction and had been the victim of sexual assault while being homeless. The two months she had spent in custody up until her January court appearance were the longest she had remained sober since she was 14.
