Highway 61 bridge work behind schedule

Drivers on Highway 61 can expect to see traffic delays continue at the Neebing River bridge, at least until the snow flies.

The bridge deck is being demolished and replaced, in two phases.

Construction on the eastern side of the bridge began in early July and the highway has been reduced to two lanes.

The $2.7-million project was awarded to a firm from Niagara Falls, and was originally scheduled to wrap up by Oct. 21.

But it appears the first phase is still a long way from being complete.  Officials from the MTO confirm with TBT News that the project is a few weeks behind schedule.

That means the western side of the bridge won’t be complete until early November.

The contractor and the ministry are working toward getting the project back on track, with all lanes re-opened before the end of the construction season.
