An organization says the practice of calling out transit stops on Thunder Bay bus routes has not been consistent. The Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB), which represents about 900 visually impaired clients in the city, is supporting the Ontario Human Rights Commission's effort to force transit operators to verbally announce all bus stops.
Yesterday the commission announced it has gone to the Human Rights Tribunal to order transit systems in Thunder Bay, Sudbury and Hamilton to make changes within 30 days.
Local CNIB Associate Manager Janet Skinner said the organization has a good working relationship with the city when it comes to accessibility issues but drivers don't always call out bus stops to riders. She wants that to improve until a new automated system is implemented. Skinner said a high percentage of the visually impaired use city transit because they aren't able to drive themselves.
