Mike Auld is the official Conservative Party nominee for the Thunder Bay - Superior North riding. He was chosen on Saturday.
The flip of a coin decided the new Conservative nominee for one of Thunder Bay's two federal ridings.
Mike Auld and Richard Harvey were candidates for the Thunder Bay – Superior North Conservative nomination. About 170 people came to the nomination meeting at the Polish Hall Saturday. Only 110 voted and the result was a tie.
The two candidates were called into a back area to agree to a coin toss. When they came back out Auld was declared the winner.
"It is a hell of a way to win," said Auld. "Those are Robert’s Rules of Orders, the rule of our party and you have to go through with it."
Auld said he’d be travelling in his riding so people get to know him better. Although not mentioning any specific dates for an election he said if there is an election one of the big issues will be economics. He also brought up the issue of roadways in his speech and how Kenora is working to create a four-lane highway.
"Highways are so important to us. They are roads for resources; roads for transportation; roads to get to the United States to bring in imports and send out exports. If you don’t have four lane roads and you have a bumpy boat trail what are you going to do? You aren’t going to advance forward."
Auld said he would work to try to get a four-lane highway in Thunder Bay as well.
Auld is a retired woods manager from Buchanan Forest Produces working 30 years in the business. He has worked behind the scenes, raising money and such for provincial politics for 20 years. Auld is 66 years old.
