Thunder Bay boasts the largest Finnish population anywhere outside of Finland.

That, according to Mayor Keith Hobbs, is what makes Thursday evening's sister city signing ceremony with Seinajoki, Finland so special.

Hobbs joined Seinajoki Mayor Jorma Rasinmaki at the Prince Arthur Hotel  to renew the long-standing relationship that's been in place for more than 40 years.

Hobbs said while all sister city ceremonies are important, this one has added significance because of the impact Finnish culture has had on Thunder Bay.

So, if Thunder Bay has the highest Finnish population outside of Finland itself, why isn't Hobbs asking the city to become a 'Finnish Territory' so to speak? I think we all know the answer to this one...

Highest concentration of Finns outside of Finland. Toronto has 2,000 more Finns than us in terms of raw numbers.

If you are going to be picky, based on the 2001 census numbers that you are quoting, Thunder Bay has 40 more people than Toronto that reported Finnish as their only ethnic origin. The 2000 more that you quote included people with multiple ethnic origins.

Maybe because the Finns do not threaten to set up road blocks.
