Alana King believes in her neighbourhood and she wants others to do the same.

King, who lives in the Windsor Street area, is co-chair of the Community Action Group. The best way to show her neighbours that the place they live can be better is by getting them together.

“I believe the best about the neighbourhood,” King said Saturday afternoon while setting up for a road hockey tournament. “Regardless of what people say and people think.”

She’s been seeing kids on neighbourhood streets playing road hockey and figured a great way to get everyone together would be to host a tournament at the local Boys and Girls Club. King said the game is a great way to teach kids to respect each other as well as have fun. It also discourages them from getting into trouble.

“To be able to get them to get along with each other I think is key for having a community,” she said.

For adults it’s a reason to sit down, eat some good food and watch kids be kids.

“It just brings everybody together,” she said. “They’re leaving feeling better about themselves, feeling better about their relationship with other people in the neighbourhood.”
