By Jamie Smith, tbnewswatch.com

Almost everyone running in a fundraiser Sunday has a personal connection to cancer the organizer says.

With more than 400 women a week being diagnosed with breast cancer, it’s not hard to see why. But 1,000 people hit the streets in Thunder Bay Sunday for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure to fight back.
Run director Bonnie Tittaferrante said the run, now in its 24 th year, takes place in 60 cities across Canada and raises $ 20 million.

Around $150,000 of that comes from right here in Thunder Bay.

“For our small size we’ve got the biggest heart,” she said before the run started at Fort William Stadium. “It’s just awesome to see so many people come out.”

It’s overwhelming to see the 60 teams, some with 30 members, taking part every year she said. As for what makes the five kilometre run so popular, Tittaferrante said she might have an answer.

“Maybe it’s the pink I’m not sure.”

Speaking of "small size"....Thunder Bay's top individual fundraiser was just a young girl - looked only 9 or 10 years old and raised over $3,000. This little girl is a shining example of what our youth is capable of!
