Local cats need some help to get a new home.

Kitty Kare Feline Rescue has been saving stray cats from being euthanized and finding them homes for more than two years. But even though the group has found homes for more than 300 cats in that time, 1200 a year are still put down.

The demand has grown to the point that the group wants to build a home for those cats that otherwise would be killed because of condition or lack of space at local shelters.

“We’ll be able to remove more cats form animal services and save more lives,” Kitty Kare’s Cindy Sakiyama said.

Thanks to Confederation College, plans for the building have already been drawn. And through the generosity of a local businessman, land has been donated. But Kitty Kare needs $200,000 to get the project built. They’re taking part in the Aviva Community Fund. From now until Oct. 15, people can vote on how the insurance company will spend $1 million on community projects throughout Canada. The more votes the group gets, the more likely Kitty Kare will be able to have its sanctuary.

““It all depends on the number of votes we receive,” Sakiyama said.

200k for cat's, come on. Not a day goes buy where somebody is asking for donations in this news media. Seems to be all a person reads here.

They're NOT asking you for money, or anyone else for donations. They are simply asking for people to vote for them, in a link that Tbnewswatch forgot to add to the article.

Most of these unwanted animals are the result of human carelessness so ya, a measly 200k is needed to help to save their lives. Compared to the $5 million fundraising campaign for sewage victims its a drop in the bucket. Personally I'd rather give a dollar to save an animal than to help replace someones furniture and video game systems.

I hate to say it, but euthanizing cats is probably the best option, rather than spending money to save a few.

Fact: there are many more cats than there are homes that want more cats.

Knowing that fact, picking and choosing specific cats to find homes for does nothing other than help those individual cats.

Might I suggest the 200k should be put into a spay/neuter fund. The proceeds of which could be used to actually reduce the number of cats in the first place, thereby reducing the problem.

Cheaper in the longterm, and better than killing the almost 1000 cats a year we are forced to now.

Someone should tell the writer of this story that the link to vote is not posted with the article.
Hopefully it will be placed so we can vote for this.
Yes, great to hear a feel good story for a change but I must also agree, I have never heard of so much "we need money" slogans lately.
With the holidays coming up, its gonna be a hard xmas for most.

Problem with life today is no one wants to make the hard decisions and all want exorbitant amount of public money to run.

Euthanize all the cats they have today and the next 200 they get. During that time accumulate a waiting list for people to get cats and then when you have a sizable list you can start taking cats in again. Heartless, yes most definitely but so is life.

Actually, the problem with life today is that human beings don't accept responsibility for their actions. These animals needing homes are the product of irresponsible pet owners that don't spay or neuter and allow their unaltered animals to roam free. There are too many bums that get pets when they can't afford them or don't have the proper mental capacity to take care of them. What you're saying is allow these people to continue to be irresponsible and just take it out on the innocent victims. The blame needs to be put where it belongs. The government should be providing funding for these organizations, let the "intelligent species" fend for themselves.

dynamiter says:
There are an estimated 63 million pet cats in the United States (Nassar and Mosier 1991), plus as many as 30 million feral cats (Luoma 1997). Cats prey on native birds (Fitzgerald 1990), plus small native mammals, amphibians, and reptiles (Dunn and Tessaglia 1994). Estimates are that feral cats in Wisconsin and Virginia kill more than 3 million birds in each state per year (Luoma 1997). Based on the Wisconsin and Virginia data, we assume that 5 birds are killed per feral cat/year; McKay (1996) reports that pet cats kill a similar number of birds as feral cats. Thus, about 465 million birds are killed by cats per year in the nation.

I would hope that every cat is spayed or neutered and every new cat owner promises to keep their cat indoors. People whine about the bird deaths associated with the proposed wind turbines - they dont even make the top 10 in average bird mortality. But we complain about wind turbines and do nothing towards controlling Sylvester.

Sorry, but I just cannot seem to get my head around the justification for spending $200k on a cat hotel. And beyond intial construction an setup, who is going to cover the ongoing operational costs?
The story states 1200 cats are euthanized per year, while they've found homes for 300. Is that just in Thunder Bay?
If so, just how many cats to they expect to be able to house? Especially after a couple of years.

I've looked into the Aviva Community Fund voting site, and there are much better uses for this money out there, in my opinion.

Mary Contrary says:
Instead of wasting money on a new facility... Don't get me wrong... I know these animals deserve help... Why not use money to spay and neuter pets that are running at large. Anyone with free kittens should be fined. Anyone caught breeding cats with no licence should be fined. Any cat that is trapped or "lost" should be fixed before returned to the owner and the cost of that can be the fine. The only way to stop all the killing is to stop the breeding! You don't see free puppies in the paper anymore. Some breeders are fixing the puppies before they are rehomed. That involves keeping them for at least 5 months! That kind of dedication needs to be applied to cats. But it will have to start with the cats that are already out there with the low income families. They won't get their animals fixed, they can't afford it. They took an animal because it was free. Catch 22 right there. Fixed animals = no free babies = lower population = less death.

Yes ALL my furry friends are fixed...

"You don't see free puppies in the paper anymore."

I have to ask, Mary, what city are you living in? Have you heard of online classifieds? There are literally hundreds of irresponsible pet owners giving away free puppies online, and that's just in our little city.

I agree with your comment though. The same question could be asked of the humane society; why spend a half a million dollars a year on a facility and employee wages when that money could be better applied to spay.neuter, feed and care for hundreds of animals? There are plenty of volunteers out there willing to put in the time and effort, the paid employees are not necessary. That alone would save $200,000+ per year.

And while some breeders are spaying.neutering their pups, so many more are not. Backyard breeders and irresponsible pet owners are rampant in Thunder Bay.

Mary Contrary says:
I am usually on Kijiji and the only free puppies I usually see are not in Tbay or very close. I see free Adult dogs. Lots of free adult dogs. I myself am looking for a smaller breed puppy, I've never paid for a mix breed dog before, but now they cost more than the pure breed dogs. Actually I can't say that... I adopted a mix breed dog from the city dog pound. He was already fixed, microchipped and had all but the rabies shot. He cost me $80. I still have him, and love him very much.

I wish I had the money to fix all the "pets" that wander through my yard. I think it would be a great help if the shelters fixed ALL the "Lost" Animals that they pick up, if they aren't already. A proper breeder would never let their pets run at large. In fact there is a city bylaw that states cat owners must follow the same rules as dog owners. Cats must be tagged, tied, and cleaned up after. Just never inforced! But that is another article. I like your comment, you got the point I was conveying.

It is so nice to see that a home is being built to house these cats. It is unfortunate when animals are harmed or killed because no one can provide them a home. That being said, community dollars are really being streched right now and there are flood victims without proper living conditions needing a warm place to stay too. This is probably not the best time to be asking Thunder Bay residents to give to support some cats, when flood victims are not getting the donations to properly run thier fund in a timely manner.
10/9/2012 9:16:34 AM
bulldog says:
They aren't asking for money, they're asking for votes on Aviva. The flood relief fund does not have their name in the Aviva competition, so that's irrelevant.

Also, many of us choose not to donate to flood relief for various reasons, so it's a perfectly appropriate time for an unrelated charity to request support.

when it costs way too much to have cats fixed, why not hit up the vets for money for this facility?

for the prices they charge to fix a cat in tbay, they certainly have a bit of extra cash laying around..

Conker2012 says:
The problem is that cats are let out to run free in the neighbourhood where they go out and mate with other cats. Dogs have to be fenced in appropriately or put on a leash. Same should apply for cats. The unwanted cats are natural predators and would do just fine on their own in the wild. Give this avila fund to something that help somebody in need and don't waste it on some stupid cats. If the loose cats become a problem, trap and euthanize them like any other wild animal. If you love your pet keep it on a leash.

I commend the people of Kitty Care for trying to do something. The cats need to be housed so they can be spayed/neutered and rehomed. And as for dogs, there may not be an overpopulation in the City of Thunder Bay but in remote communities and on First Nations...animal control by gunshot is still common. Shame on our country. Lets get vets where they are needed and control the feral animal problem for the benefit of animals AND people.
