THUNDER BAY -- Dougall Media broadcasters are hoping to bring in even more money for the city's disaster relief fund.

The company's three local radio stations are hosting another marathon broadcast for the Thunder Bay and Area Disaster Relief Fund.

CKPR morning show hosts Danny Foresta and Laura Zaina kicked off the event at Intercity Shopping Centre Wednesday. The event will continue throughout the day before wrapping up at 6 p.m.

It’s the second fundraising campaign held by Dougall Media.

The first fundraising broadcast took place at Intercity Shopping Centre in May and brought more than $300,000 for the disaster relief fund. The disaster relief fund at the 11th hour of fundraising to meet its self-imposed Jan. 31 deadline.

Jacky Ward was one of the first to give at the fundraising event. Ward, who owns A-1 Sewage Services, donated $1,000 on behalf of the company.

“We were working in the east end the whole time last May,” Ward said. “We were helping people recover from the floods and we wanted to give back to all the people who lost everything. It is so important for people to donate because lots of people didn’t have the insurance they needed to cover their losses. Any little bit can help people get the Christmas decorations or new books that they lost.”

During the flooding disaster, Ward said they were working nearly 24 hours a day by bringing in portal toilets for residents and servicing the area as best they could. Ward said it was devastating to see all of the destruction.

She added that she believes that all the campaigns help to bring awareness that there is still a need in the community.

“We’re still helping out at the Atlantic Avenue Sewage Treatment Plant and once a month there seems to be something that needs to be done,” she said. “It was just a lot of devastation.”

Zaina said there’s still a lot of people who need to have their basements fixed. The province has agreed to match the dollars raised municipally on a two-for-one basis.

She said in order to get the best bang for the buck every dollar counts.

“A $1,000 will turn into $3,000, so the more money we raise today the more we can add to what they already raised and triple again,” she said.

“Like the first one Danny and I went in saying ‘$10,000 that’s insane.’ This time Danny and I both said ‘we’re not going to guess at any number’. Whatever number we raise will be amazing. Any bit helps.”

So tired of the flood relief. Buy insurance to protect your assets like most of us do. It wasn't a tornado or earthquake. Yes it sucked but life goes on and no one died. And for those of you who plan to criticize me I was flooded but had insurance. Why should the citizens of Thunder Bay still have to donate to this cause? I am sure that many would rather donate to other causes.

You had insurance that covered your assets. Good, I'm happy for you. Many people with insurance got screwed over, with their insurance grabbing onto loopholes, or simply giving them the runaround. There are many people, with insurance, who still have their basements sealed off ... they haven't even been CLEANED properly yet.

But hey, your problems got solved fast, so there's no issues, right?

Quit making excuses for those who neglected to buy insurance. Either they did or didn't. Maybe they didn't know they were under-insured, but that is their own fault. Not mine. But still, despite my disagreeing with you I still donated a fair chunk of change to those who were under-insured and didn't have backflow prevention valves installed. Finally, great job by Danny and Laura and the rest of the crew at DM!

Is this a fund raising a scam. Why are they trying to fund raise from the public. Taxes the waythat they are in this country and we have to fend for ourselves. What the H is going on. Canada sends multy millions in aid but they cant help with a flood that happined 9 months ago. Sick. I getting tired of this.

Just reading the first two comments. I'm betting neither one of you had any flood damage...or am I wrong?
I don't mind a public fund-raiser - it's totally voluntary, and doesn't cost the taxpayer a dime.
Donate if you want - either way, it's fine....but try not to be a jerk about it.

Sorry fastball but you are very wrong. I had 2 feet of sewage in my basement but I had insurance. I have had house insurance for over 20 years so I have always had sewer backup. And I am not being a jerk. I had to clean my own basement and remove the mouldy drywall and insulation. If I waited for a cleanup crew I might still be waiting. Because we cleaned it and removed it ourselves we already have a contractor rebuilding our basement. Some contractors have over 600 houses to repair. Sometimes you need to help yourself. Remember the old saying God helps those who help themselves. And a final note you can bill your insurance company for the hours of labour you put in cleaning and ripping down mouldy drywall etc.

The people receiving help from the disaster relief fund (donations) are not the people involved in the lawsuit. You're punishing the wrong people.

We have insurance on our home but we were not covered because oddly we did not have enough damage according to the insurance company! Even though my sons room was completely destroyed his bed dresser other items were all ruined and trashed also our furnace was effected and our washer and dryer we also lost a lot of other items ..... this will help all the families that fall between the cracks and cant afford to replace the things they need!

Well the problem is that the same people still don't understand that it is up to the home owner to make sure he has insurance on his house. They didn't get it on the other 400 stories.

We were insured, and to be honest when this originally happened we were not even sure if we were. From the very start, much like others, we began cleaning and removing unaffected contents. Our adjuster, a really good guy from London, immediately informed us they would reimburse our time and equipment I purchased (huge shop vac, industrial fans, etc.) and they immediately did. As a result of our initial work, we had a professional company in quickly to properly finish the remediation (first general, Winnipeg). Reliance was in within 4 days to replace our hot water tank, and frost general Sault Ste. Marie completed a fantastic rebuild by mid december. I don't tell this story to judge anyone else's circumstance, but everyone should remember that many people were well taken care of by strangers who were here by choice. Many insurance and contractors stepped up!

We've donated to this cause because we are grateful for our experience and realize it could have been different.
