Confederation College's student union is talking its cue from the likes of Ellen DeGeneres when it comes to tackling challenging or taboo topics.
The Student Union of Confederation College Inc. launched a talk show series Thursday in the student commons area called Let's Talk About...
The first episode tackled the topic of sex.
Student wellness and diversity director Kristine Kleist said they wanted to educate and entertain at the same time and they thought a talk show format fit the "edutainment" formula they were looking for.
"It's a great way to get lots of information out there," she said.
The hour-long program featured a sex expert, relationship guru and musical guest the Aviary Kings.
The show was also filmed by the college's film students and was broadcast to the regional campuses and will later be available online.
Kleist said SUCCI hopes to make the show a monthly event and said the next show will discuss mental health.
She added she hopes students walk away from the show feeling like they learned something new but were also able to relate to the material.
"It's all about making sure the students make sure they have a safe but fun time here at college," she said.
Host Nancy Freeborn said she accepted the offer to host the show because sex is a topic people need to know about.
"We need to educate in an entertaining way," she said.
"The dialogue has to be open. People have to be comfortable to be able to talk about this kind of stuff."
