Some Lakehead University students managed to number-crunch their way to the top in a recent national accounting competition.
Accounting majors Ben Anderson, Lucas Bauer, Nick Dzikowski and Taylor Hosanna faced off against 12 other accounting teams in Winnipeg during the Gathering of Accounting Associates, Professionals and Students to take first place for the university for the second time since 2011.
"That was pretty exciting for sure," Anderson said of the win.
The foursome were given a case study and two-and-a-half-hours to find the best solutions for a fictional client armed with information from assets to personal information.
"We had to look at all the factors basically and come up with what his best solution was," Anderson said.
Then they presented their case to a panel of judges who deemed Lakehead's presentation the best of the bunch.
Associate professor of accounting Camillo Lento said it's a great way to show the students that what they're learning at Lakehead can translate into careers.
"It's a wonderful feeling for the students and for the faculty and for the university as well to say 'here's sort of what our students can do'," he said.
It also helps out when Anderson and his fellow fourth-year students start handing out resumes. Employers are looking for skills that go beyond a good grade and having a top-title from a national competition shows that.
