THUNDER BAY -- Homelessness in this city takes many forms.

While those living on the street do represent a portion of the homeless population, the problem is much bigger than that.

The first of three town hall meetings was held Wednesday night at the Finlandia Club to discuss and educate the public on what the current situation of homelessness is. The first meeting focused on housing programs and the criminal justice system.

Salvation Army Executive director Rob Kerr says the homeless problem is growing in the city, and a big issue is trying to find a way to keep the homeless out of prison and get them into homes.

The second and third public forums will be held on June 26 and Sept. 11at the Finlandia Club.

Those townhalls are expected to address health and costs on the taxpayers caused by homelessness.

We could build and permanently finance housing and programming for each and every last one of our homeless for less than the cost of the events centre.

People before super-fun-time-sports/concerts please.

When I think about homeless people, I wonder why there isnt more "basic" shelter.. like a rooming house where you get a room with a closet and perhaps a kitchenette (Bathrooms can be shared per floor etc). At least its a shelter, and an address.
Oddly, these homeless causes often turn into "affordable housing" where people would get a decent 2 bedroom house with kitchen, dining room, living room, basement etc. The scope of the project just seems to blossom, and just cant fit everyone.

Homelessness has about 3 definitions so there can't be one solution that will fit all. For some there are more issues than simply shelter, or others it becomes a caretaking concern, and that leads to dependence. And of course, there will be plenty of "not in my backyard" in any offered solution. It starts with awareness and open discussion, so this is the start. And then the will of the people to make a difference and the will of those affected to choose a different path. But it starts with these conversations.
