Movie brings back fond Big Thunder memories

A movie now playing in the theatre has sparked a memory of mine of one of the highlights of the winter sports scene in the city. I'm talking about the ski-jumping competitions, both World Cup and Continental levels at Big Thunder.

A movie now playing in the theatre has sparked a memory of mine of one of the highlights of the winter sports scene in the city.

I'm talking about the ski-jumping competitions, both World Cup and Continental levels at Big Thunder.

The movie about England's Eddie "The Eagle" Edwards and his drive to compete at the 1988 Calgary Olympics brings to mind those great weekends at our world-class facility and marvelling at the skill and ability of those athletes.

Matti Nykkanen "The Flying Finn,''  our own John Lockyer, Jason Myslycki and Steve Collins and Ottawa's Horst Bulau are just a few of the jumpers who thrilled us over the years.

Our hosting of the World Cup and National competitions each year eventually led to the 1995 Nordic World Ski Championships.

As you watch the movie about Eddie "The Eagle'' Edwards, you will see those spectacular images of the ski-jumps, and I'm sure you will remember too when our facilities were very well-used.

It is sad to drive past them as they have been closed down for a number of years, and just remember when those jumps were well-utilized, and drew thousands of fans to watch the best ski-fliers of the time.
