I have to say, I am completely overwhelmed right now. The outpouring of community support and a genuine desire to help others out is absolutely inspirational.
I donated some money to the Salvation Army, but what I really like to do is feed people. Whether someone is happy, sad, celebrating, or whatever- I like to bring something to eat. Some people hug, I feed. So, I wanted to find a find a way to do that, but on a larger scale. So, almost on a whim I Facebooked Jim from Eat Local Pizza to see if he was open, because I thought it would be fun to ask around for some donations in the office and order the volunteers and flood victims some pizza!
I was expecting a few takers, you know- we’ll send over a few pies. Absolutely not! There were dozens of people who stepped up and gave what they could. In addition to that, Eat Local Pizza and Pastry said they would match our donations! We went from a few, to a whole lotta Pizza! It is so cool to see everything that the local restaurants and catering companies are doing to help out.
You know this week, I’ve seen a lot of peoples true colours come out. It has been so uplifting seeing the generosity and the huge heart that Thunder Bay has. The people in this city have stepped up in a big way, from creating a command centre in St Peter's church, to having thousands of people on Facebook asking “How can I help?” All day Dougall Media stations, 91-5 CKPR, Rock 94 and the Thunder have been broadcasting from Intercity and as of right now, have raised over 120,000 dollars for the Salvation Army. That is absolutely amazing!
There are still lots of people that need help- so if you have a little idea of a way to help- go with it- others want to help to and will help you reach your goal. Maybe you are part of a baby yoga group- get together some maternity clothes from all of the moms and donate them! Those with food allergies and restrictions, you know the challenges of having a restricted diet- Who better than you to donate some gluten free or diabetes friendly foods! . If you have the time, energy or resources please help out.
Way to go Thunder Bay- You make me so proud to be a part of this City! I’d love to hear what you are doing to help out!
And once again, Eat Local Pizza and pastry, you are so awesome- You have no idea how much the community appreciates you. Community- you can of course show your appreciation by supporting Eat Local Pizza and Pastry. Really- they are fantastic at what they do.
