Changing Washington’s NFL team name an opportunity for positive rebranding

The pressure is increasing on the ownership of Washington’s NFL team to back down and change its name.

The franchise, originally based in Boston, adopted the Redskins name in the early 30s. The name remained after owner George Preston Marshall re-located the team to Washington in 1937.

The Redskins name was originally chosen as an homage to the Boston Tea Party, when some revolutionists dressed as Native Americans to destroy a shipment of tea to protest taxes.

As it took up its new home in the capital, the nickname didn't really fit anymore. But, teams that change cities in most cases do not change names as well.

The name is considered racist and derogatory, and several times over the years there have been efforts to try to get it changed.

I think it should be. It would provide a chance to develop a modern and exciting brand for one of the NFL's most valuable franchises.

New nicknames in sports have opted more to animals or objects, staying clear of any type of controversy.

The former Lakehead University name of Nor'Westers which was symbolized by a mountain range, although the previous logo was a male voyageur,  was changed very successively over 10 years ago to the now Thunderwolves.

There is little doubt the NFL Washington franchise would have a successful transition, as well as getting in step with modern thinking.
