Have you seen any turtles crossing the road lately? As the first day of summer approaches, turtles are on the move. Whether they are crossing the road to get to their egg-laying habitat or are just out sunning themselves on the pavement, turtles are at risk every day from traffic zipping by. Out of the eight species of turtles we have across the province of Ontario, seven are listed as a Species at Risk. A “species at risk” is any naturally-occurring plant or animal in danger of extinction or of disappearing from the province. Many turtles are at risk due to habitat loss, natural predation and even collection for pets. The main threat to their population, however, is roads.
