Nice racks

By Jamie Smith, tbnewswatch.com

The city is hoping a new program will make biking to local businesses easier on the eyes.

The bike rack for business program, which launched Friday morning, will increase bike parking for local businesses by giving them discounts on bike racks.

But it’s more than just a bike rack.

The installation will feature images from four local artists as well. Active transportation coordinator Adam Krupper said one of the barriers for people cycling in the city is that there weren’t enough places to lock up a bike once they arrived at a business. That left them having to chain their bike to anything they could find, including gas lines.

“That’s a problem,” Krupper said.

The piece of cycling art a business gets will depend on the what image route, which includes the May, Memorial and Algoma route, The Arthur Street Route and Red River Road, the business is on.

There will also be a standard rack available to other city businesses not on those routes. The racks, which will cost up to $300, have already been requested by 32 businesses.

“Today’s the official launch so we’ve had a lot of positive interest from the business community,” Krupper said.

Nothing like a good rack enhancement to beautify the area.

I like forward thinking. Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver and Victoria all have initiatives like these. Not coincidentally, they have a significantly higher percentage of people using bikes for transportation. Great move by the city. Now if they could fix a couple of these messy bike lanes.

Forward thinking ~ YES .........The three cities you mentioned have well thought out bike plan's, lane's, and flow, with safety as the number one priority.
vs
Paint lines on a road, that give people the impression that you're forward thinking.

I can't tell you how long I've waited to see a nice rack in Thunder Bay. That said, I never expected that Virdiramo would be involved in that dream being fulfilled!

Why not use the artist who did the bent poles at the marina? He was a bargain.

Good! Actually, I don't have too much trouble locking my bike at most places.
There's one store that has signs saying,"Be Green! Bring your own bag!"
And yet they have no bicycle rack. I won't mention the name of the store(s) but they sell liquor there.

Ditch the goofy circle design, which looks like a cable or lock won't fit thru anyways, doh, and reduce the cost to less than 50 bucks. Or get some cheap bent pipe from a suffering muffler shop owner.
