Without First Nations, Canada wouldn’t be what it is today.
That’s one of many reasons Fort William Historical Park held its annual Anishnawbe Keeshigun festival over the weekend. First Nations played a crucial role not only in the fur trade but in building Canada as a whole. Fort spokesman Marty Mascarin points to the war of 1812 as an example.
“They aided the British in stopping American forces all along the border so if it wasn’t for their involvement we could very well be under the stars and stripes instead of the red and white today,” Mascarin said. “It’s very important to highlight that when we can.”
Saturday and Sunday saw traditional singing, dancing and drumming along with a Powwow and games to celebrate the event.
“Plus a lot of other demonstrations and activities that you don’t normally see at the fort every day,” Mascarin said. “Those big and small have something to get involved with.”
Hundreds of people filled the fort. Mascarin said good weather helped the turnout.
