A $100 ticket could fetch you a $345,000 grand prize.

The Fort William Rotary Club officially launched the 24th Rotary House Lottery at a news conference Wednesday. . This year's house is on Hutton Park Drive in Sherwood Estates. Bob Hookham is the Chair of the House Lottery and he said he believes that the 1,700-square foot home is a beautiful prize.

The Fort William Rotary struggled to sell tickets again last year, but now that this is the only house lottery in Thunder Bay, organizers hope the lack of competition will help sell more tickets. But Rotary President Jill Zachary admits that selling all 7,000 tickets will won't be easy.

Since 1986, more than $3 million in house lottery profits has been donated to local and district charities and youth organizations.

One of this year's recipients will be the Rural Food Distribution Association. The first early bird draw of $5,000 will be held April 14.

The grand-prize ticket will be drawn on Canada Day.

Am I the only one who won't buy a ticket on a house that is sooooo expensive I can't hope to pay the taxes? Try bringing the prizes into line with "Joe Lunchpail" and you may just sell all the tickets.

Haven't the last few local "lottery" results proved there is a low demand for $100 tickets in general? I suppose the real test will be if a single house lottery can sell out. Wasn't there also a problem with a recent $20 per ticket lottery, pleading for support in the waning days? It seems to me this is a flawed business model, who might only be benefiting the house builder.

It's worth $345,000 and taxes are 1.980760% for residential properties for the 2009 tax year, so that works out to $6,833.62. It varies a little depending on services and is based on provincial assessments, which might be lower than the price stated but probably not by much. So, I'd say taxes are between $6,500 and $7,000 for this property.
