THUNDER BAY -- The body found near the Lakehead University fieldhouse has been identified as a 31-year-old Thunder Bay man.

The Thunder Bay Police Service issued a media release Wednesday announcing the man's next of kin have been notified. The man's identity has not been publicly released.

The body was found on Tuesday afternoon by a passerby along the path in the wooded area south of the fieldhouse. Police confirmed they were investigating a sudden death.

Police are continuing to hold the scene as investigators are waiting for autopsy results.

Details have not been provided about the condition of the body or how long it may have been there but police are appealing for anyone who may have been walking in this area "over the past few days" to come forward.

"At this point in time we're just asking to gather any information that we can so we can have a full picture as to what we're dealing with," Const. Julie Tilbury said.

A communication bulletin issued by Lakehead University advises their student health and counselling centre in Thunder Bay and health and wellness centre in Orillia are available to any affected members of the university community.
