MARATHON, ON — An SUV owned by Ontario Provincial Police was destroyed by fire Sunday evening in Marathon.

According to police, an on-duty officer had parked the 2016 Chevy Tahoe for a short time on a residential street.

When the officer returned to the vehicle, he noticed smoke coming from under the hood.

He attempted unsuccessfully to extinguish the fire with an extinguisher.

The Marathon Fire Department arrived a short time later, but the vehicle is considered a total loss.

Two residences nearby sustained some damage to their siding as well as to a fence.

The fire remains under investigation.
