Sinkhole snarls traffic at Thunder Bay Expressway and Dawson Road (2 Photos)

A narrow hole up to three metres deep has developed

THUNDER BAY — A narrow but apparently deep sinkhole has forced the closure of both westbound lanes of Dawson Road at the Thunder Bay Expressway intersection.

The hole is believed to have developed during an intense rainfall on Monday afternoon.

Ontario 511 reports the incident happened at about 2:30 p.m..

One worker at the scene said the hole was estimated to be close to three metres deep.

Traffic from Red River Road that would normally proceed west through the intersection was diverted as a result of the incident.

The westbound left turn lanes on the Thunder Bay Expressway at Dawson were also blocked off.

There was no immediate word on how long it will take to complete repairs to the road.

Work was still underway late into the evening.
