TBFR crews respond to two overnight fires

THUNDER BAY - Two structural fires kept crews with Thunder Bay Fire Rescue busy early Saturday morning.

According to a media release issued by Thunder Bay Rescue, crews responded to reports of a kitchen fire at approximately 1:30 a.m. on Ontario Street Saturday morning.

A second alarm was called after the first crews arrived on the scene. The fire caused moderate damage to the home but resulted in nine people and numerous pets requiring assistance from the Red Cross.

A total of five pumpers, one aerial ladder, and the platoon chief responded to the scene. There were no injuries as a result of the fire.

A short time later, a second call came in at approximately 1:42 a.m. of a structural fire on Athabasca Street.

Arriving crews discovered a cardboard compactor on fire and it was contained to the exterior of the warehouse.

The warehouse was filled with smoke as a result of the fire and it took some time to clear the building.

Three pumpers, an aerial ladder, and the platoon chief responded. There were no injuries as a result of the fire and the cause is under investigation.
