THUNDER BAY - A vacant residential building on the city’s south side was heavily damaged by fire late Saturday evening.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue responded to a structural fire on the 900 block of Edward Street south at approximately 10:30 p.m. Saturday.

Arriving crews observed heavy smoke and flames in the basement, which were migrating to other areas of the structure. A defensive strategy was implemented by command.

Fire crews had to work fast to prevent the fire from spreading to a nearby occupied structure that was only two meters away.

The fire in the basement was quickly brought under control and crews were able to enter the structure with breathing apparatuses to do a search of the building. It was determined that no one was in the building at the time of the fire.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Five pumper trucks, one aerial ladder, and a command unit responded to the fire.
