OPP exits Pikangikum as leadership demands independent police force

Pikangikum First Nations leadership is demanding a stand-alone First Nations Police force following a dispute last week that saw some OPP officers removed from the community.

Pikangikum First Nations leadership is demanding a stand-alone First Nations Police force following a dispute last week that saw some OPP officers removed from the community.

The demand was sparked by an incident last Wednesday in which a band member was allegedly roughed up by an OPP officer.

Pikangikum Legal Counsel Doug Keshon said this led to a demonstration by some band members and the eventual departure from the First Nations community of some police officers.

Keshon said tensions in Pikangikum have now eased. But he added that the band is petitioning for the establishment of an independent police service, staffed by First Nations police officers.
