Superstore reaches tentative deal with UFCW

By Scott Paradis, tbnewswatch.com

Real Canadian Superstore grocery and retail store workers in Thunder Bay may have avoided a strike after the union that represents them reached a tentative deal with their employer Wednesday.

The United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1000A, which represents more than 300 Superstore employees in the city, reached the tentative deal with the southern Ontario-based Loblaw Companies Limited employer Wednesday night. That deal will be brought back to the UFCW-member employees for them to vote on Sunday, July 25.

"We think that both parties have done everything, and have come to a consensus where, at this point in time, we’ve gotten the best we can get for the membership," said Paul Docherty, a member of the union’s bargaining committee.

"I’m hoping that the membership will see that an equitable deal has been reached by both parties and that will avoid us having to go out on strike."

The ratification vote will take place at the Valhalla Inn at 7 p.m. Sunday, July 25.

Docherty said he could not comment the details within the tentative agreement until the members have had a chance to view it on July 25.
