City's disc golf course up and running

By Jamie Smith tbnewswatch.com
Brake Repairs! Front Ends! Mufflers! Shocks! Not just mufflers - MINUTE MUFFLER, 677 Memorial Avenue. Open Monday-Saturday. Email: tminutemuffler@shaw.caClick here for details.

Residents walking near Birch Point will here "Fore!" coming out of the woods now that the city has created a disc golf course.

The 18-hole course was set up over the Spring with target baskets installed earlier this Summer. John Gotwals said he first started playing the sport in Edmonton in 2001. He said it’s great that the city has installed the free course for residents to use the park.

"It’s awesome. It’s such a great way to get outside when you don’t really want a workout but you want to be outside and throwing the disc around a bit," Gotwals. "It’s in a beautiful park and it’s just a great way to spend an afternoon."

The sport is much more difficult than throwing a Frisbee around during a day at the beach though he added. With drivers, irons and putting discs, more accurate for shorter distances, Gotwals said it can be a challenge. Discs range in price from $15 to $30 each depending on the quality said Gotwals.

City park planner Werner Schwar said the city wanted the course at Birch Point because Boulevard Lake is already such a recreation hub but the East side of the lake was under utilized. No site preparation was required Schwar said and purchasing and installing the baskets cost around $6,000. The feedback si far has been positive.

"I think most people still don’t know it’s up and opening but the comments we have so far especially from the youth really love the activity," Schwar said.

The city plans to have an official launch for the course in the second week of August.

Give it up Cousin, this is a rising sport all over North America. If it gets people outside and promotes a healthy lifestyle, I'm all for it.

You just keep complaining from your couch.

Just because you dont play doesn't mean that its not a good investment. If it gets used and it keep people out of trouble and in shape then I would think that it is a good investment.

While riding your bicycle in the bike lane to go and play disc golf may be the flavor of the day a bunch of sober 21 year olds may lead to the downfall of the Mcginty gov

More negative input from another person with no understanding of the role the state has to play in the lives of its citizens. Providing recreational activities is a vital function of the city and for $6000.00 we got a good deal.

I agree with educator! Getting a beautiful frisbee golf course for only $6000 is a great deal for Thunder Bay (How much would a new golf course cost?) For a fraction of the cost of the skate park we got a safe, fun, free activity for young and old. With the local growth of the Ultimate Frisbee league and now Disc Golf, Thunder Bay is once again catching up with the rest of the world. Way to go TBay!

this was one of those simple addons to a park that can enjoy plenty of free entertainment to us. ive used it once so far, and many more within my family have gone out a couple times and everytime i go by the park theres a group playing. For a very low cost of equipment that is made of something that should see very little if any maintenance put in with bushes of a park and not really using up any of the parks real estate. i hope more pop up in other parks around town, vickers park especially comes to mind. all for about a dime out of each of our property taxes.

This is awesome. If it hits, I'd like to see more of them around town. Especially for the price.
This seems like it was a good investment.

Thank you to all involved.

i cant believe that someone would actually try and dump on this disc golf course. $6000 was a good deal the course is very well designed and I've played a few to know. If you have a better idea for 6grand for the city to spend on something that is better than a one time expense no maintenance free for everyone to use and on a beautiful unused piece of park please let us all know. we don't get anywhere with negativity and from what i have experienced out at Birch Point it has all been positive.

Why ot put a course layout and score card on line in a PDF at the City's website so that people can print it out and go play. or does that make sense?

At first reaction to the title, I was expecting the city to spend an ungodly amount on this disc golf course and I was going to oppose it on the grounds that we have bigger priorities that we should be focusing on.

But for a course that only cost $6000 that will require little to no maintenance, I'll give it my thumbs up. Good on Council.

There are at least two that I saw while I stayed in Lutsen for a weekend just last month. I had never seen it before. Wasn't able to fit it in, but I'm glad Thunder Bay finally has one! When I head to Boulevard Lake next time, I'll definitely try it out.
