There are now two Northwestern Ontario communities that are officially considering becoming the host site for Canada's nuclear waste.

Last week, the Township of Ear Falls announced it is seeking an initial assessment of its potential as a host site. On Wednesday night, Ignace town council unanimously passed a resolution to formally enter the site selection process, after studying the idea for the past year.

The Nuclear Waste Management Organization is charged with finding a willing and suitable community for the construction of an underground repository for the country's used nuclear fuels.

The selection process is expected to take up to 10 years.

NWMO officials say the $16-to $24 billion project should be in operation around 2025.
