With about a week-and-a-half to go until the filing deadline, the candidate list for the Oct. 25 municipal election is on the rise.

David Polhill has made it a two-candidate race in Northwood Ward, filing to run against two-time incumbent Mark Bentz, while Norm Staal and former Current River Coun. Dick Waddington have upped the at-large race to nine.

Dougall Media has also learned that a pair of at-large incumbents intend to file their nomination papers before the deadline.

Coun. Rebecca Johnson on Monday said she plans to re-offer and will file her papers next week, while Coun. Larry Hebert, first elected in 2006, confirmed he will seek a second at-large term and will likely make it official on Wednesday.   Click here to submit a letter to the editor.

advocate says:
I have been so disappointed with Hebert. Mostly over the Waterfront issue. It would have been one thing if he opposed it, but he used the watered-down, politically safe approach of trying to move it to the Pool 6 area. Unfortunately for him, I think the voters saw through this and knew the reasons why it could not be built there (it just was not possible due to environmental issues and that it would not generate any economic benefit).

Now we head into the election, and while I believe many are still against the Waterfront decisions, the lack of discussion of it as a platform shows me that the majority are in support of the change.

So his low risk option, I believe was riskier than first thought and hurt his image of a potential strong decision maker and made him look like more of a typical politician.

Thus, I do not think he will be re-elected.

But again, maybe I am wrong and maybe there are more anti-Waterfront change people than I think and maybe they will stand up for him. But we will see.

For those who are against the current plan of the waterfront development, which is what Hebert was against, he did stand out.

He was never against Marina Park development, he was against this plan. That's enough for me.

Actually based on the petitions delivered to City Hall. The opposition to Marina Park was several times greater than the wind farm. Only 1,275 people signed the Anti Wind Farm petition but if memory serves me well, the FOMP had several thousand more signatures.

Hey Advocate, why the attack on Larry Herbert ? The guy is one of the brightest minds on Council. He is experienced in a variety of senior executive positions, is totally committed to TBAY, and is one of the few on council who knows what it takes to balance the books. Frankly we could use a few more like him.

The Waterfront issue is dead and buried. Forget it move on. I suspect you have a personal grudge, because your argument is a bit on the weak side.

P.S. I have never met Larry, I just noticed his work on council, and he stands out as a mature and informed voice.

Pawn, if Larry did his time on Council like he did as a business person, I would be pushing for him for Mayor. I voted for him based on the wonderful things he has done before he became a Councillor. But once he got on board, he turned into a typical politician.

He disappointed me greatly.

Rick - actually I am not. Very few people are against developing the waterfront.

However there is a large group of people against how and what is being done. Most of those people have their own idea and agenda to how it should be done and what should or shouldn't go there.

Funny thing is if the city listens to those people there will be another group opposed to what and how its being done. Including some from the current groups who has agendas and ideas are not happening.

City councils in a city this big and diverse will never have 100% support from the city, thus is why they are always being dragged through the mud.

The Wolf says:
The Pawn - the petitions delivered to City Hall for the waterfront were not for the stopping of development, they were for stopping of the development plans that were going in motion.

Big difference there.

86,000 people in Thunder Bay are eligible to vote. 7,000 people out of them isn't much. Certainly not enough to win a referendum.

I know you live in your bubbled world where you and only you have all the answers to life and running our city. Every story on here you say its being done wrong and have the answer to the right way to do it, whats your real name, Mr Hutt?

Id love to hear more from our candidates regarding the hospital tax that Comissio claims they want to steal from us.

Where are our concillors on the wind farm? Where are they on the subject of the hospital debt that will be over and done with?

I better here some talk and soon.

Id also like it if our news organizations actually asked some hard hitting questions of these people instead of lobbing softballs at them whenever they decide to.

Its time TBSOURCE, step up to the plate.

ABSOLUTELY

This city council has been given a free ride on to many issues.

And here is a criticism for our so-called paper, the number one read paper in the country they keep telling us.

they never hesitate to lob criticism at the province, most of the time in a very slanted view.

When was the last time you saw a criticism of the Mayor - ever

How about the council as a whole on the hospital tax issue.

How about the windfarm.

Our paper is MIA and people should be asking why.

I would not expect a weekly newspaper like the Source to provide that type of reporting. That should rightly fall to the daily, but I won't hold my breath.

I am just waiting for the editorial near election time endorsing the current mayor. Watch for it. It is coming to a newstand near you.

pieislandrefugee says:
captain, youre probably right about the upcoming Peterson support editorial.

there has been some nonsense seemingly in favour of the windfarm already, however it hasnt targeted the real problem with the windfarm, and thats how this all came out with hidden negotiations etc...

This is why newspapers are on the ropes though. Instead of actually getting out there and reporting like the old days, they just grab stuff from other sources, compile it into and present it in their format and call it a paper.

People can find their own stories to rally behind if they want. all without their help thanks to the internet.

What we need (and this paper does a pretty decent job with what they do) is some true reporting that digs deeper into whats really going on out there. We need reporters who dont just show one side of the story and give their interview-ee a platform to preach from.

CTV is terrible for this. They just put people up in front of the camera and let them spout off their side of the story, without ever questioning or presenting the opposing view.

TB News is getting a bit bad for this too. (are you listening Barry Third?) I know these people are more talented than that, so Id like to see them dig a little harder, and Id like to see the editors and producers get a little bolder instead of trying to just take the easy way out too many times.

Have our reporters TRIED to corner the mayor or councillors on any of these issues? or does she only come out of her cave when she wants to grandstand along with something that makes her look good?

we certainly dont have a transparent municipal government, and thats something I bet we all can agree on here.

Gotta agree with the pieman, our local papers do a lousy job of reporting the news to the public. There is no digging, no investigation, no insight.
9/2/2010 10:33:35 AM
windphart says:
Sam, Pie, I agree with you as well. The problem with the media is that they send out young reporters who have little experience dealing with politics. In defense however, it's probably a matter of dollars as both media are feeling the crunch. Nobody wants to view ads but that's what's paying their bills.

Rebecca Johnson re-filing? Please. When asked about the low numbers filing a few months ago she said that must be becuase the citizens are pleased with the work they've done. Someone needs to pour her a strong cup of reality.

captain says:
and if I didn't already prove my point about the paper, we have today

Yesterday the editorial slams the province. Some of it may have been legit. A fair discussion about rates, but they slammed them.

Then today, the Fed's give about 700 grand and you would think that global warming has been solved, and all diseases cured.

I can't recall the last time our paper gave the province a fair editorial. And if people don't think it is serious, just wait for this coming election in town.

Let's see how much coverage Hobbs and the other three get, versus the Mayor who seems to be getting her picture in their quite nicely in the past couple of weeks.

Must be just a coincidence.
